The only reason I do not give him five stars here is because of the things I listed above.

The author’s explanations are unusually clear, and he writes at a simple level without being patronizing or slow-paced. Jim Al-Khalili is extremely educated in this field and does a great job of explaining it to the average person. It describes the bending of spacetime being the cause of gravity, the experiments that proved Einstein to be correct and made him a household name and so on.

I am sure to read this again as to gain a further grasp on the subjects in this addicting book that I had a hard time putting down. One last gripe on the author, and it’s more of a personal preference than something I feel he did incorrectly.

Black Holes and Time Warps: This book is written a while back. Very informative and entertaining at the same time. It was also interesting to read how Carl Sagan’s request for help with Contact led to the discovery that macroscopic wormholes are theoretically possible. He explains throughout the book his ideas and other’s ideas and where they disagree, but fails to do so here, which is a little disappointing.

However, it tells us nothing about timee the electron wormohles doing when it is not observed. Having read the first edition and now the second edition and although I’d recommend this book strongly to anyone with an interest in these topics that isn’t perusing – or has ji a degree in physics, I have a couple of gripes I’d like to bring some attention to.

A simple word change would get rid of some of the confusion this can create. Finally here’s an extremely petty complaint that has to do with the editor and not the author.

I particularly appreciated the description Excellent book whose purpose is to familiarize the reader with the universe, how it was created, what it is made of, and how time affects everything. At an appreciable fraction of the speed of light time itself slows down. You do not need a strong background in science to understand.


The explanations are up to date and the author knows how to provide honest accounts of his exotic subject matter … A good virtue of the book is that it successfully distinguishes between truth and fiction. Blqck has once again done everyone a good turn in providing it.

The author seems to be a rather conservative physicist, which makes me wonder macgines he wrote the book at all.

The content of this book was not too bad and along the lines of other books I have read on this topic. But with a difference, though.

What might happen if you fall into a black hole? This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Barring those, this would absolutely be a five star book! I highly recommend it! I must also admit that this book made me look up to the night sky several times after I read it and in my opinion is a great read for the physicist and non physicist alike!

The book itself describes the phenomena in question with skill and grace, remembering that this book is meant for laypeople and others unfamiliar with the subject. That the reason it gets dark at night is proof of the Big Bang?
