The story of the next twenty months is an epic tale of survival against the odds. As they say, “truth is stranger than fiction. I’m not sure why Shackleton expected great personal acclaim for this adventure. I really felt like I got to know these guys. The toughness, resilience and resourcefulness of Shackleton and his crew is truly hard to conceive.
Shackleton’s story is not just one epic tale atrapaados survival – it’s more like six separate and equally incredible tales linked back to back: I read whenever I could and I think my family would send me to the south pole if I started one more sentence with, “So, in the book I’m reading.
I could have used a chart or a dramatis personae.
I actually started reading a different version of this adventure – Endurance by Alfred Lansing – but switched to this version about the time the ship started to sink. I was in no way an adventurer like Shackleton but my expereince in the high latitudes gave me a real appreciation of the extremes of Earth. Lists with This Book.

Sort of a triumph of failing, really. I couldn’t believe my luck when I found this book and opened the cover. Having the pictures of the individuals to refer back to throughout the reading journey brought it home that it was real experiences by alexsnder men. Alexander collected very many of them and used them to great advantage. We see these men as real people, and glimpse the grandeur and bitter cold of the Antarctic.
